A friend of mine told me that it is possible to damage your hearing with hearing aids if you don’t use them properly. Obviously I am sceptical about this claim seeing as how they are specifically made to help you hear better. I’m sure they would put safety measures into place to ensure that people don’t hurt themselves. The only reason I question this is because she is usually quite accurate in her advice over the years so she may be right on the money here too! So is it true that hearing aids can damage hearing?
The only way a hearing aid could damage your hearing is if it was set at too high a level. For this reason you should never try anyone else’s hearing aid on or buy a second hand one. In reality, very few hearing aids are set to these dangerous levels. The wearing of correctly fitted hearing aids can actually help your hearing in future – not just the present. By providing stimulus to the parts of the brain responsible for decoding sounds keeps the brain active and actually delays or reduces the likelihood of dementia.
